Well, this is unusual! For the first time I can remember (and I've been blogging HEB deals since 2012), HEB has virtually NO name brand sales in their upcoming ad for September 4 - 10, 2019.
Instead, HEB is kicking off HEB Brand Days -- promising a 10% discount (or more) on thousands of HEB brand items.
According to the ad scan, this will include fresh beef, seafood, and produce, along with shelf staples like HEB-branded toilet paper, paper towels, and trash bags.
It looks like no yellow coupons will be necessary for these savings -- they will simply ring up at the register with no action necessary on the shopper's part.
NOTE: It doesn't seem like all yellow coupons are going away. However, I counted all the yellow coupon offers in the ad ending September 3 (around 75) with the offers in this week's ad (13.) So that is quite a stark difference!

I personally am quite torn on this HEB Brand Days promotion. On one hand, I can certainly see the appeal to HEB -- they aren't having to spend money and time hanging and printing the same amount of yellow coupons they normally distribute each week.
On the other hand, a 10% discount isn't that exciting, especially for long-time couponers/readers of this blog who know how frequently we can save 30% to 50% on most name brand items through matching sales and coupons.
It makes me think of when JCPenney famously abandoned coupons as part of a splashy 'Fair And Square' pricing strategy back in 2012 -- only to wind up firing their company president and bringing back coupons less than a year later after sales tanked.

Still, even though 10% savings on HEB brand items certainly won't make me rush out to the store, but it might help the average non-couponer save a few extra bucks on their weekly shopping trip.
What are your thoughts about this HEB Brand Days offer? Is it easier for you to manage your shopping trips this way? Or do you prefer the additional savings that comes with more traditional couponing?

It was a GREAT DISAPPOINTMENT to me when I saw the HEB ad, as I too LOVE the hunt for that SPECIALLY PRICED item that I can stock up on, and basically this time it adds up to NOTHING!
ReplyDeleteIf others share my sentiment, I think HEB will notice a drop in traffic. It is just TOO HOT to go out shopping for NO DEALS, and we may all find what we have on hand now will stretch for quite a while.
I don't feel in the least bit motivated by this, AT ALL. No Thrill factor. In fact, this to ME is the exact opposite of the heydays when we had TRIPLE coupons AND competition with other major food stores before HEB dominated and drove them out.
Shopping SHOULD be fun, and maybe a bit of a game for the dedicated, and I feel so DOWN I'm waiting for the ads from Walmart and La Fiesta just to motivate me to go out to buy SOMETHING ON SALE!
