Reader Tip: Which HEB Stores Are The Best/Worst To Coupon At?

I've noticed a pretty big uptick in comments recently in the various Facebook coupon groups -- and it sounds like a lot of folks are experiencing some issues couponing at their HEB stores!

The two most common complaints I've seen in groups (and in emails from readers) are either a) their catalina isn't printing at checkout when they are shopping a catalina promotion, or b) cashiers are denying coupons -- including printable HEB coupons -- when they aren't scanning.

But I haven't been having either of those issues at my neighborhood stores (Kitty Hawk in Universal City, and I-35 & 3009 in Schertz.)

And I know my friend Brenda looooves to coupon at the Zarzamora HEB in San Antonio.

So it got me wondering -- which HEB stores would you say are the best to coupon at, and which ones always seem particularly problematic?

I would love to hear your nominees for the best and worst stores in the comments below, so we can start a running list to help new couponers!

Please note that if you comment on Facebook, that info won't be recorded in this post for other readers -- only a comment on the blog itself will do that.

So what do you say, readers?  If you were recommending one HEB location to visit to a brand-new couponer, which one would you pick, and why?

  3. The Killeen location on Trimmier is pretty good about coupons. I think I've only ever had a problem less than a handful of times in the couple years that I've been couponing.

  4. I've never had a problem at the Thousand Oaks/Jones Maltsberger Heb. The managers are super nice and helpful and I never have issues with coupons. I also have a feeling, based on people's posts on facebook that there aren't too many couponers in my area. Although the Heb is small so there isn't too much in the clearance department.

  6. Bulverde HEB changes some yellow coupons so the value is not as good and some regular prices on items are higher than San Antonio stores.

  7. HEB Plus in Burleson (south ft worth) hasn't refused coupons but the cashiers are pretty terrible at making sure they all actually scan. I never use more than 10 coupons in a transaction but in the 2 months I've lived here I've had to go to customer service 4 times for a refund (I've been bad at checking them as they scan, I blame the two year old grabbing everything in sight, haha)

So check the monitor as they scan!

  8. HEB in San Marcos does not refuse, but the checkers are strict and do not understand the piggyback rule. They also don't make sure that all the coupons scan and if they don't scan they are not willing to go back and try. San Marcos also has higher prices than the San Antonio stores and rarely have things on discount.

  9. Ive had issue with the yellow heb coupons at the lakeline heb. Have had to dig through packed bags to physically prove to cashiers that i followed rules and bought correct products. Besides that no matter what heb i go to the cashiers tend to glare at me like a criminal as they are scanning my coupons. And i 'might' use 10-15 coupons at a time, not stacks like some of the more experienced stockpilers. I feel for you guys!

    1. I've had the same issue at Lakeline. They seem to have the most trouble scanning the yellow in store coupons and always want to unpack to verify the items were indeed purchased. However, the cashiers are usually good with printed and clipped coupons. I've only had issues with maybe one or two cashiers total. Also, if there is a combo loco coupon and the free item is out of stock, I've had them sub in a similar item of equal value without fighting me on it.

  10. La Vernia is pretty good, as long as it is not busy. Also, smaller than most so not always have items you want.

  11. I mostly shop at the Schertz 3009 store. My only complaint is that sometimes coupons don't scan and they just move on and put it in their coupon bag without fixing it. I feel like if I don't watch them then I could lose out on those savings. If I do see it then they are quick to fix it but I shouldn't have have to do that.

  13. I shop my HEB on HWY 365(port Arthur) only had one issue with a digital coupon and the manger told me there's nothing they can do in store I called the # she gave me and it was added to my account immediately! Anytime my coupons have trouble scanning the cashiers always call over a manger which since I'm reading some just keep going I'm assuming that's a good thing. ( Plus I'm getting to know the managers pretty well. lol when they get called over the see it's a coupon look up and it's me and they always laugh and joke in a sweet way. Never seem bothered) I've had trouble with my basket coupons scanning but usually if they type them in it goes straight through. When they were out of the meal deal items he wrote me a rain check and stapled the yellow coupons to it so I could still get all my savings when they get back in stock

  14. I've worked in three different heb stores in customer service and I'm a couponaholic. I can tell you the common mistakes are on both ends: watch the screen don't worry about your groceries pilling up on the conveyor belt it'll stress you out, be nice to the cashier because they will "forget" a coupon on purpose sometimes especially if it's busy and they are stressed, limit how many coupons you use in one transaction because there are more chances for mistakes and it's unfair to other customers, stay calm because it is at the discretion of managers to be flexible with how coupons go through and no two managers are alike at any store. Also, I personally go slow when it comes to the paying part. First I do any basket coupons and only hand those over, printable coupons next and only hand those over, same for the yellow and manufacturer coupons and watch the screen the whole time. after everything digital number and then cash. When you give them all i once I find I have more trouble especially if they don't listen to me and scan a manufacturer before my basket and no one will listen to me. it you rush everything and the cashier hits clear while you are imputing your phone number it skips it. anyways, i hope it helps.
