HEB Reader Tip: Watch For Meat Markdown Changes

Reader Gloria writes in with news that HEB may be changing the way they handle markdowns on meat near its expiration date!

As regular HEB shoppers know, meat that's within a day or two of its sell-by date is usually marked down a dollar or two, to entice hungry buyers to snap it up before it goes bad.

But when Gloria was at the 3009 HEB store yesterday, she was able to score a whopping 25% off a big pack of USDA Select boneless beef chuck roast that still had a couple of days left before its sell-by day!

So instead of paying the marked price of $16.76, she got hers for just $12.57 -- a much better discount than what we would have seen in the past.

I don't know whether this is a change being tested at the 3009 store, or whether we will see this at all HEB stores shortly -- but watch for it (and maybe clear some room in your freezer just in case.)

Big thanks to Gloria for the tip!

    1. I live in Austin, too, and that's my HEB. I never find meat markdowns there, but I think it is because it is such a busy store. Try the store at Wells Branch and I-35 before 10 a.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays. I've found some great markdowns there, but you do have to go early and on weekdays. The markdowns are done first thing, and they are always near 50%.

    1. The butchers monitor for markdowns every day. They do it early in the morning, so you have to get there early. I find the best selection is on Wednesday and Thursday morning because they are trying to make room to stock up for the weekend. Markdowns happen every day, but they
